Thought to have been lost, dispersed or even melted down during the Second World War, the priceless ancient artifacts known as the 'Gold of Troy' are among the most important antiquities in existence. The 259 pieces in this spectacular collection were unearthed more than a century ago by the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann, and have been the subject of endless fascination ever since. In this lavish volume, the official catalogue of the exhibition at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, these magnificent objects are reproduced in full colour for the first time, and their history is told in compelling detail. The objects in this publication--now generally thought to date to the second half of the 3rd millennium BC, a thousand years earlier than the fabled city Schliemann was seeking--are from 13 separate treasures excavated by Schliemann, and include precious jewelry such as diadems, rings, bracelets, pendants, beads and earrings, as well as figurines, vessels and axes. An invaluable addition to the literature on antiquity, The Gold of Troy includes an introduction by Irina Antonova, Director of the Pushkin Museum, who was present when the treasure first arrived in Moscow, and a short biography of Schliemann. The main text, by Pushkin curators Vladimir Tolstikov and Mikhail Treister, provides a detailed history of the artifacts as well as scholarly attributions. Donald Easton, the leading western scholar of Trojan antiquities, has overseen the preparation of this edition, making it a major event in international publishing. With 275 illustrations, 272 in colour. Hard Cover. |
